Ready to Become a Chief Stew?

Here's How to Turn Self-Doubt into Confidence

Let's get straight to the point.

If you're thinking about stepping up as a Chief Stew, it's probably because you feel ready for more responsibility. You're good at what you do, you know how to deliver exceptional service, and you're ready to take the next step in your career.

But then that little voice creeps in.

Am I ready? What if I'm not good enough? What if I don't know how to lead a team?

Suddenly, the role you've been working towards feels a little more intimidating.

Here's what I want you to understand: that voice isn't necessarily trying to sabotage you. It may be reminding you that there's more to learn before you're ready to take on your next challenge.

Being an excellent stewardess and being a confident Chief Stew require different skill sets. The good news? You can develop those skills before you step into the role, rather than waiting until you're onboard and figuring everything out as you go.

You already know that preparation is key to delivering exceptional service. So why wouldn't you apply the same principle to your career development?

Here are three steps to help you turn self-doubt into confidence and prepare for your first Chief Stew role.

1. Master the Essential Stew Duties

Before you can effectively train, support, and correct others, you need a solid understanding of the job yourself.

Make sure you've developed strong foundations in service, housekeeping, and laundry. You don't need to know everything, but you should feel confident performing the essential duties of an interior department to a high standard.

The goal isn't to become the person who does everything. It's to understand the work well enough to set expectations, teach others, and recognize when something needs improvement.

As a Chief Stew, your role will shift from completing tasks yourself to ensuring your team can perform them to the standards you establish. Having that practical foundation will help you lead with credibility and confidence.

2. Create Your Interior Management System

Your Interior Management System, often called your SOPs or Stew Bible, will become the backbone of your management responsibilities.

Without one, you'll spend valuable time answering the same questions, fixing avoidable mistakes, and trying to keep every procedure and detail in your head. With a well-organized system, you can establish clear standards, delegate more effectively, and make training new team members much easier.

Your Stew Bible isn't just a manual. It's a tool that helps you communicate expectations, maintain consistency, and build a department that doesn't depend on you remembering every little detail.

And you don't have to start from scratch!

The Mermaids Kick-Starter Bible (MKSB) includes 90+ digital, editable yacht interior templates and guides to help you build your own Interior Management System while saving hours of work.

Work smarter, set your team up for success, and lead by example from day one.

3. Invest in Your Self-Leadership Skills

Being a Chief Stew isn't just about managing tasks. It's about managing people, navigating difficult conversations, setting boundaries, and creating a team that works well together.

That starts with learning to lead yourself.

Developing your self-awareness, communication, emotional regulation, and decision-making skills will help you become a more confident leader, especially when things don't go according to plan.

But here's something important to remember: sometimes, even when you have the skills, the experience, and the systems in place, self-doubt can still creep in.

You can know you're capable and still question yourself. You can be prepared for the role and still feel afraid of getting it wrong.

That's when it's time to look inward.

What beliefs are holding you back? Are you afraid of making mistakes, disappointing others, or being judged?

These limiting beliefs can influence how you show up as a leader, how you make decisions, and whether you feel confident enough to step into your potential.

Developing your self-leadership means not only building practical skills but also understanding the patterns and beliefs that may be keeping you stuck.

You don't have to work through this alone. I've spent over seven years supporting stewardesses with their personal and professional development, helping them build confidence, work through limiting beliefs, and develop a healthier relationship with themselves and their leadership roles.
